2048: rules, tips to win and how it helps at work

How the game works

2048 is a sliding-number puzzle on a 4 × 4 board. Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli released it as a weekend project in 2014, and within weeks it spread around the world.

Every move slides all tiles as far as they can go in one direction: up, down, left or right. When two tiles with the same number meet, they merge into one tile with their sum, so two 8s become a 16. After each move a new 2 or 4 appears on an empty square.

Build a 2048 tile to win, then keep going for a higher score. The game ends when the board is full and no move can merge anything.

Tips to win

  1. Pick one corner and keep your largest tile there.
  2. Favour two directions, such as left and down, and use a third only when the others are blocked.
  3. Avoid the direction that pulls the big tile out of its corner, because a small 2 can slip into its place.
  4. Keep the row along that corner full and ordered from large to small, so merges cascade toward it.
  5. Before each move, think about where the new tile may appear and leave room for it.

Make it an office break

A long report is open, and the next paragraph refuses to come. Instead of scrolling the news, open 2048 for three or four minutes. The rules need no explanation, and the board fits on a laptop or a phone.

One clear goal and quick decisions give your mind a different kind of task from the words and numbers in the document. When you return, the paragraph often looks simpler. Signed in, you keep your best score and can try to beat it in the next break.

Why it helps at work

  • Switches attention from text and spreadsheets to visual patterns
  • Trains planning a few moves ahead
  • Fits a three-to-five-minute pause
