Rock Paper Scissors: rules, tips to win and how it helps at work

How the game works

Rock Paper Scissors is a series of hidden choices for two players. Before each round’s timer ends, choose rock, paper or scissors on your own screen. The move locks immediately and stays secret until the round resolves, even if both people choose early.

Rock beats scissors, scissors beat paper, and paper beats rock. Matching moves give neither player a point. If only one person chooses in time, that person wins the round. If neither chooses, nobody scores.

The first player to reach the configured target of one, three or five round wins takes the match. If the match deadline arrives first, completed rounds decide it: the higher score wins, and equal scores draw. An unfinished round adds nothing.

Tips to win

  1. The reveal tells you what happened, not what will come next.
  2. Someone who lost with rock might try paper, repeat rock or pick scissors. A single round proves no pattern.
  3. Notice habits across several reveals, but leave yourself time to choose. Missing the choice window may hand over one round, not the whole match.

Make it an office break

A team stand-up ends early, leaving two colleagues a five-minute gap before their next task. They play one match from their desks and keep each move private. After a tie, each wonders whether the other will switch.

After a win, the next reveal might overturn that little theory. The brief pauses between reveals give them something to react to without gathering a group or starting a call.

They stop when the match ends, with the rest of the gap still free for water or a stretch.

Why it helps at work

  • Starts in seconds with no rules to learn
  • Gives a light laugh between tasks
  • A quick, fair way to break the ice with a new colleague
