The game and an office break

Memory: rules, tips to win and how it helps at work

How the game works

Memory lays sixteen face-down cards in a 4×4 grid: eight pictures, each appearing twice. On your turn, reveal one card and then another. A matching pair stays open, scores one point and gives you another turn.

Different pictures remain visible to both players for two seconds, then close as the turn passes. Each card opening has a 30-second deadline. If you miss it, any single open card closes and your turn ends.

The match stops when every pair is found or five minutes pass. The higher score wins, and equal scores draw.

Tips to win

  1. The board is shared, so your colleague’s unsuccessful flips are useful information too.
  2. Try to connect each newly revealed picture to a position you saw earlier, rather than memorising an entire row at once.
  3. When you know a pair, take it before experimenting: the point and extra turn let you test another remembered location without handing the board over.

Make it an office break

After two colleagues finish checking a dense spreadsheet together, a short Memory game can give them a quiet pause at separate desks. Both watch every reveal, including the other person’s misses: a wrong guess may show the exact card the next player needs.

When the board clears, compare the picture that kept slipping from memory, then return to the file. The five-minute match limit keeps the invitation easy to fit into the day.

Why it helps at work

  • Trains short-term visual memory
  • A quiet pause you can share without leaving your desk
  • Five minutes from invitation to result
