The game and an office break

Backgammon: rules, tips to win and how it helps at work

How the game works

In Backgammon, each player races fifteen checkers toward their home board, then bears them off. The first to remove all fifteen wins. Roll two dice and use both when possible, with doubles granting four moves.

A lone opposing checker can be hit and sent to the bar, while points occupied by two or more are blocked.

Tips to win

  1. A pair of checkers makes a point the opponent cannot land on, so consider building safe stepping-stones rather than leaving single checkers exposed.
  2. If one is hit, bring every checker back from the bar before moving others.
  3. Once all your checkers are home, you can begin bearing them off.

Make it an office break

Set up a longer break-time duel with a coworker and follow the dice as the race shifts across the board. Each roll creates a choice between advancing, covering a point, or hitting a lone checker—plenty to discuss while you try to get all fifteen home first.

Why it helps at work

  • Balances luck and decision-making
  • Every roll gives something to talk about
  • Good for a longer, relaxed break
