The game and an office break

Chess: rules, tips to win and how it helps at work

How the game works

Chess is a two-player board game in which White moves first and the players alternate. Move the pieces according to their standard rules, never leaving your own king in check. Checkmate the opposing king to win.

Each player has a 10-minute clock, with three extra seconds added after each move.

Tips to win

  1. Develop pieces so they protect one another, and keep your king safe while looking for a way to threaten the opponent.
  2. The clock matters too: it runs only during your turn, so use your time to check for forcing moves without letting a promising attack consume the whole game.

Make it an office break

Invite a coworker to a focused match during a longer break and take turns making plans over the board. The shared 10-minute clock keeps the duel moving, while the extra seconds after each move leave room to pause and consider a tricky position.

Why it helps at work

  • Develops focus, planning and calm under the clock
  • Gives a deep yet time-boxed duel
  • A shared language for colleagues of any team
